Image of girl catching California grunion

Grunion running has become a favorite past time of people young and old alike. The fish can be easily picked up while they are temporarily stranded. The California Department of Fish and Game has imposed some regulations in order to help preserve the species. For example, a valid state fishing license is required for anyone 16 years or older, the only tool sport fishermen may use to catch grunion are their hands, and no holes or other trapping devices may be used. There is no catch limit on grunion, however the season is closed during April and May. Grunion hunters should only take what they can eat since the population size is not well known. Grunion runs last about one to three hours after the high tide, and start about 20 minutes after the first grunion has stranded on the beach. There are many beaches in Southern California where grunion are known to spawn. Check with the local beach lifeguards or aquariums for the best location.
