Image of subadult northern elephant seals

Young males practice the fighting skills they will use as adults to establish dominance. During a mock fight, two males push their bodies against each other, causing their bodies to rise upwards. Some typical mock fighting behaviors include biting each other on the nose and around the neck area and slamming their bodies together. Most fights do not last long and tend to end when one male submits and 'runs' away.
